Fort Drum is a well-known U.S. Army military installation situated in northern New York, close to the city ofWatertown. Pine Camp, which was first founded in 1908, had substantial growth and changes, particularly during big wars like World War II. To handle the inflow of soldiers preparing for the war, Pine Camp witnessed the construction of several structures in 1941, including 240 dormitories, 84 meal halls, and 99 leisure buildings. Approximately 3,000 structures were constructed during this time to help the war effort, marking a substantial development. In 1951, the camp was renamed Camp Drum in remembrance of Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum, a veteran of both World Wars I and II. After World War II, the location saw more development; in particular, it was used as a vital training field for the Korean War. It was given the official name Fort Drum in 1974, at which point a garrison was stationed there permanently. The most significant change happened when the 10th Mountain Division, which had been reconstituted and given the designation of a light infantry division, decided to relocate there in 1984. Since then, this division has been one of the U.S. Army's most deployed forces, having contributed significantly to several combat actions, including those in Afghanistan and Iraq. Due to the deployment of the 10th Mountain Division, there was a significant increase in the construction of new roads, structures, and family housing to support the troops and their families. Fort Drum has remained strategically significant over time, honouring its historical heritage while adjusting to modern military requirements.
